Apple has teamed up with the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) to launch a new guide to “help families create healthy digital habits.”

The new guidance follows Apple’s rollout of a number of new child safety features in iOS 27.

Apple says this new guide is intended to help families balance screen time with sleep, exercise, schoolwork and socializing.

The guide includes a six-step breakdown for families, according to Apple:

  • Start a conversation about screen timewith tips for parents on how to broach the topic and set expectations to help children feel included in the plan.
  • Create a child accountwhich allows age-based protections and gives parents access to parental controls to manage their children’s experience.
  • Configure security settings for websites and appsincluding Ask to Buy and Ask to Browse, so families can review new apps and websites together.
  • Plan device usageusing available time and schedules to balance time spent online with sleep, schoolwork, physical activity, and time with family and friends.
  • Manage communicationswith parents deciding who their children can communicate with and Communication Safety, turned on by default for all users under 18, helping protect children from viewing or sharing sensitive content.
  • Continue the conversation as the children growwith indications on the adaptation of the family plan over time.
