Following May’s calculation-based usage change, Google will soon introduce limits that free users of Gemini models and AI Plus subscribers will be able to access.
According to a support document updated this week, users of the Gemini without Google AI subscription will be limited to the (3.5) Flash-Lite model. Starting October 9, users who don’t pay for Gemini will no longer be able to access (3.6) Flash or (3.1) Pro.
In the meantime, AI Plus subscribers will be limited to Flash-Lite and Flash, with Pro no longer available. These $4.99 per month users “will receive an email explaining when these changes go into effect.”

There are no regressions for AI professional AND AI Ultra. Rather, $19.99/month customers will have access to the Deep Think option for “maximum parallel reasoning,” currently only available on the $99.99 and $199.99/month plans.

In October, the Gemini app also appears to be adding new “low,” “medium,” and “high” commitment levels for each available model.
This will increase the model’s ability to complete tasks and provide more in-depth answers to questions, but it will also use more of the limit.
At the moment, you can simply enable “Extended Thinking: Complex Problem Solving”. The three new effort/thought levels would match what’s available in Google AI Studio and Antigravity.
It’s unclear where Gemini 4 Argon will fit. Google announced earlier this week that it will be coming to AI Ultra subscribers for the first time. The company has yet to specify whether the Argon will be classified as a Pro model or part of a new top tier.
