Microsoft updates its compact Surface Pro 12 with an efficient Snapdragon X2 Plus processor and a new 90 Hz display, although its quality is slightly worse than before.

We just reviewed the 2026 Microsoft Surface Pro 12. This compact convertible remains a truly distinctive offering on the market, as it is the only fanless Windows device powered by a Snapdragon processor. This year’s model uses an efficient Snapdragon X2 Plus with 6 processor cores. Single-core and graphics performance are slightly improved over the previous model. The multi-core performance, however, is slightly lower, as its predecessor had an 8-core processor. However, the performance is more than adequate for everyday tasks. Microsoft keeps the chassis unchanged from its predecessor, maintaining its typically high rigidity. In addition to the built-in kickstand, it also has a magnetic attachment for the optional Surface Pen. Compatible keyboard covers are available separately.

At first glance, the display also appears unchanged, still being a 12-inch IPS touchscreen with a 90 Hz refresh rate. However, while last year’s panel was supplied by BOE, the current model uses a Sharp panel. This display is slightly brighter, but the black level and consequently the maximum contrast ratio are worse. Response times are also slightly slower, and ghosting occurs even in 90 Hz mode. Additionally, the display seems to consume slightly more power, as battery life is slightly shorter than the previous model. The relatively weak speakers are another drawback.

Overall, the Surface Pro 12 remains largely unrivaled thanks to its passive cooling. It offers a complete Windows system with decent performance in a compact package for on-the-go use. At home it can also be easily connected to a large monitor and used as a normal silent PC.
