New owners of the iPhone Duo will receive an extra gift if they purchase it from an Apple Store, with the ability to customize the smartphone’s startup screen to greet them by name.
The iPhone Duo will be available to the public on October 23, with pre-orders starting on October 12. However, for some customers who opt for the full Apple in-store shopping experience, they can get an extra touch of personalization.
Second Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman in a Friday night X post, Apple retail stores will have a system that will change the iPhone Duo startup process. Once started, the iPhone Duo will display “Hello” on the screen followed by the owner’s name, such as “Hello, John” when it first turns on.
While it’s unclear how this happens, it could rely on Presto, Apple’s system for updating the software of stock iPhones that are still stored in their unopened packaging.
Stores will have a system for making the change, Gurman adds. However, there is no mention of whether this can be changed or disabled after purchase.
Not all customers will benefit from this level of customization. It will apparently only be available in US Apple stores, for the iPhone Duo, and only in English or Spanish.
