‘Tenzing’ is now available to stream on Apple TV
A few days ago, Apple Original Films held a limited theatrical premiere of “Tenzing,” its latest adventure film starring Genden Phuntsok, Tom Hiddleston (Life of Chuck) and Willem Dafoe (At Eternity’s Gate).
Interestingly, “Tenzing” is the second mountaineering release set in an icy landscape to debut in recent days, following the Oct. 2 premiere of the documentary “The Last First: Winter K2.”
And although “Tenzing” is not a documentary, it is based on a true story. Here’s how Apple TV describes the film:
Based on true events, “Tenzing” tells the little-known story of Tenzing Norgay (Genden Phuntsok), a talented Himalayan mountaineer who, together with New Zealand mountaineer Edmund Hillary (Tom Hiddleston), was the first to climb Mount Everest. Encouraged by his wife Dawa (Thinley Lhamo), Tenzing finds an ally in the expedition’s secretary Jill Henderson (Caitríona Balfe). Together, they convince Colonel John Hunt (Willem Dafoe) that Tenzing belongs in the British climbing team, rather than merely serving it. Where Western mountaineers see “Everest” as something to be conquered, Tenzing venerates “Chomolungma” as the sacred mother goddess. What follows is an ascent defined as much by the tensions between competing backgrounds, classes, and ambitions as by the dangers of the mountain itself. But high above the world, empire, rank and aspiration fade, leaving two outsiders bound by mutual respect and trust – and for Tenzing, the realization of both a lifelong dream and a spiritual calling.
October was a busy month for Apple TV, with premieres including “The Last First: Winter K2,” the British comedy-drama “Small Prophets” and the John Cena-directed action film “Matchbox The Movie.”
In the coming weeks, Apple TV will also premiere the second season of “Where’s Wanda?” and the thriller series “Nocturne,” along with “Heart,” a true crime podcast centered on a disturbing story.
