According to a new report from MacRumorsApple employees are being told to warn customers that the iPhone Duo likely won’t be available for purchase on launch day if a pre-order hasn’t already been placed.

Right now, Apple’s website suggests checking back for iPhone Duo availability on October 24. However, this is not a guarantee that the shares are actually available, however MacRumors:

Apple Store employees told MacRumors that they have been informed that there will likely be no stock of the ‌iPhone Duo‌ available for purchase on launch day. Staff have been asked to discourage customers without pre-orders from turning up expecting to buy the device, warning them they will be disappointed.

This isn’t necessarily a surprise, given that Apple said yesterday that demand for the iPhone Duo is “extraordinary” and we’ve known for some time that there were manufacturing constraints that would lead to a limited supply of the iPhone Duo closer to launch.

However, this is still our first real sign that, even if you line up at an Apple Store the night before the iPhone Duo launches, you might not actually get a device. Some stores may not receive additional shipments beyond those already pre-ordered.

As of now, the iPhone Duo is sold out until January. If these supply constraints remain, it will likely be difficult to purchase a device in the near future. Scalpers have also been charging absurd markups on iPhone Duo orders closer to launch day.

If you really want an iPhone Duo sooner rather than later, the carriers and Best Buy seem to be a decent bet, at least in the US.
