Switch-2-jailbreak-produces-first-game-dump-even-as-Nintendo.jpg

The Switch 2 jailbreak breathed new life into the console’s homebrew scene. Nintendo has taken steps to block the ns2jb exploit, but word is spreading of another potential milestone. The first current generation game is downloaded Deltarune Chapters 1-4 AND The Nightbloods betas have emerged.

An important progress?

Developed by pepsipu, the ns2jb software attacks a vulnerability in the console file system. The now cancelled Smile BASIC 4 the title is a gateway to hacking. While piracy and emulation are unlikely without a kernel exploit, this opens the door for unofficial apps to launch.

Another advantage of the Switch 2 jailbreak is modding, already seen with custom characters The world of Mario Kart. Even more significantly, full game dumps for two versions have now emerged. With Deltaruneextracting romfs exposed the files and assets for the initial chapters of the RPG.

Meanwhile, Centro Leaks has described a datamine of The Nightbloods on social media. A screenshot shows the file structure for the upcoming FromSoftware project. The world of Mario Kart is still being dissected and a new 3D model of Peach has appeared.

If hackers can decrypt Switch 2 games, it would be a critical step towards creating playable ROMs. However, without hardware encryption keys, you will not be able to perform backups in emulators. Ns2jb may also not work with firmware versions updated after 23.0.1.

While jailbreaking the Switch 2 doesn’t immediately unlock a thriving piracy scene, the gaming giant has gotten in on the action. Smile BASIC 4 is no longer available on the eShop, disappointing homebrewer enthusiasts. However, a new WebKit exploit could make the download unnecessary.

Nintendo’s response

Even the famous developer Gezine, involved in the PS5 jailbreak, says that Nintendo has contacted them. In July, the researcher discovered a different offline exploit. Even so, they posted breaking news on social media and remain a valuable resource for the homebrew community. It’s unclear what the message contained, but it may have been a cease-and-desist notice.

Despite lawsuits and the downfall of numerous emulators, Nintendo has not stopped hosting original Switch ROMs. Given that its successor is less than a year and a half old, it will likely focus on strengthening the console’s security protocols.
