Apple’s first touchscreen MacBook Pro reportedly costs a premium $400, with a starting price of $2,899.
Apple is expected to introduce 14- and 16-inch touchscreen MacBook Pro models on Wednesday as premium additions to the lineup. Existing non-touchscreen models will remain available alongside them.
Second Bloomberg’s sources, Apple has mulled a starting price of $2,899 for the 14-inch model with the M5 Pro chip. That would make it $400 more expensive than the current M5 Pro 14-inch MacBook Pro.
The current 16-inch MacBook Pro starts at $2,999 without a touchscreen. A corresponding increase of $400 would place the new model at $3,399.
At $2,899, the 14-inch model would have the highest starting price of any new MacBook Pro. The price works out to $700 more than the 14-inch and 16-inch M5 Pro MacBook Pro models before Apple’s mid-year price increases.
The new touchscreen MacBooks will feature an OLED XDR display and a dynamic island, while maintaining the overall look of the current range. They will also have thinner display edges, slightly thinner bodies, and weigh less.
Apple also redesigned the hinge to keep the screen stable during touch input. The cooling system has been redesigned, reducing weight and improving airflow through the zipper.
The company has updated macOS Golden Gate to support tapping, including dial-like menus that appear around the user’s finger. The keyboard and trackpad will remain the primary input methods.
Apple expects to start taking pre-orders on Wednesday, with sales potentially starting on November 6. This would match the release date of the updated iPad mini, M6 MacBook Pro, and M6 iMac announced earlier this week.
The first touchscreen MacBook Pros will likely feature the M5 Pro and M5 Max processors, skipping the M6 chip. Bloomberg says Apple is also developing the M7 Pro and M7 Max versions for fall 2027.
