Apple-says-the-iPhone-Duo-has-a-replaceable-foldable-display.jpg

Foldable displays tend to show a more visible crease over time, but Apple’s Kate Bergeron says the iPhone Duo has a replaceable overlay layer on the foldable screen to help mitigate this problem.

The iPhone Duo’s “cover layer” on the foldable display can be replaced over time for a pristine look

Following the introduction of the iPhone Duo last month, Apple executives gave interviews explaining how the company intentionally tried to maximize durability and minimize the bending problems that plague other foldable devices.

As part of this effort, it appears that the iPhone Duo has a unique design feature to ensure a “day one” experience for years to come: a replaceable cover layer on the foldable display.

Here’s Kate Bergeron, Apple’s vice president of hardware engineering, speaking to @angietutorials on TikTok:

“The matte coating on the display does a very good job of, I would say, minimizing creases. But there’s a cover layer on top and we’ve done a significant amount of engineering work to help wear it out as long as possible and to make sure we get the most performance out of that layer. It’s actually replaceable, which is a really nice thing for the customer, to be able to remove that layer and get a new one.”

Apple refers to this “coverage level” in its list of estimated AppleCare service costs for iPhone Duo. As noted by Quinn Nelson, replacing the overlay costs $19 with AppleCare. Its cost without coverage is currently unknown.

So if you’re worried about spending more than $2,000 on an iPhone Duo only to find that the display crease becomes more noticeable over time, it looks like Apple has a solution.
