Civilization 7 Change the physical copy shown

Nintendo may be hoping to extinguish the physical port of Civilization 7 on Switch. The cartridge is a gateway to the CivSwitch exploit and establishes access to the user area on the Switch 2 console. An Amazon reseller informed a customer of a recall and suggested the boxed code version as a replacement.

Recently, developers have publicized a number of exploits for Nintendo’s latest console. While not a full jailbreak for the Switch 2, CivSwitch provides access to the user area and could lead to significant advancements. Citing safety concerns, 2K Games reportedly recalled the suddenly popular title Civilization 7 cartridge.

A suspicious call

Reddit user MaruluVR shared how a German Amazon retailer reached out to another homebrew enthusiast. After purchasing a boxed copy of the Civilization 7 Change port, learned they couldn’t process the order. The message explains that “the publisher has withdrawn the physical version (game cartridge)” due to “technical and security requirements”.

The email states that the retailer has been asked to recall the Switch title and offers alternatives. If the Switch 2 game was an option, they could replace the code-in-box version, which includes the current-gen upgrade. Otherwise, the only solution is cancellation and refund.

Likely unaware of the Switch 2’s jailbreak and exploits, the seller finds the recall baffling. However, the homebrew community believes the timing is too random. Since Gezine’s CivSwitch appeared, the turn-based strategy experience has been selling for higher prices on eBay. Other Reddit posters also report cancellations for the often-sold out target.

It’s unclear whether Nintendo asked 2K Games to limit physical access Civilization 7 average. However, the gaming giant had previously blocked eShop users from downloading SmileBASIC 4. Available for the current generation system, it is an entry point for the ns2jb exploit. The jailbreak breaches a deeper level of security, allowing hackers to download Switch 2 games and introduce a piracy threat.

How CivSwitch works

Even with limitations, CivSwitch allows testers to explore console vulnerabilities. Multiplayer chat is the sweet spot, as it allows testers to run custom JavaScript code. To gain access to the user area, they must insert an unpatched file Civilization 7 cartridge. A programmed Raspberry Pi Pico or Pico 2 then connects to the handheld and acts as a USB keyboard for typing code.

Nintendo has not commented on CivSwitch, the ns2jb jailbreak, or related findings. Regardless, its actions could minimize damage until updated firmware fixes the security flaws.
