One Redditor used Claude Code AI to create a Mac temperature monitoring app and found that the machine was much hotter than expected. Claude reported that he had found a crypto miner that was using more than 1,000% of CPU cycles, then added a spontaneous comment denying that he had installed it.
Some Redditors were understandably wary of Claude’s off-the-cuff comment that he wasn’t responsible for installing the rogue app…
Reddit user UntilHEX shared Claude’s report on the reason for the overheating (via Macworld).
“Most importantly: your Mac is running a cryptominer that I didn’t put there. When checking sensor accuracy | I saw xmrig using about 1175% of the CPU, about 12 cores. That’s why your temperatures are so high, with the CPU peaking at 112°C.”
All that seemed to be missing from Claude’s comment was the word “totally.”
Reddit users have differing opinions on the suspicious-sounding comment, but it seems more likely that it’s a training artifact than an AI gone mad.
