If you’re like me and bought an iPhone Duo, you’ll probably be a little disappointed with the options on the market for placing it on a table. Apple’s official $129 folio with kickstand is expensive, flimsy, and gets in the way of the external display. MagSafe wallets that double as kickstands are too tall for the back of the phone, and there aren’t many good third-party cases yet.
That said, the perfect option for an iPhone Duo kickstand may have been hiding in plain sight this entire time.
The reason I say it’s hidden in plain sight is because this accessory isn’t actually designed for the iPhone Duo, it works on all iPhones. This is the PopSocket Low-Pro, a low-profile MagSafe PopSocket with a ring that flips up and acts as a kickstand. It also works as a regular PopSocket if you’re interested.
Overview
This PopSocket has some strong points on iPhone Duo:
- It’s sturdy enough to prop your phone up on a table, even when it’s open
- It’s thin enough for MagSafe charging to pass through (guaranteed, you’ll generate some extra heat)
- The additional magnetic force of the PopSocket actually allows an open iPhone Duo to stay on a MagSafe mount without bending too much
On that last point, you may have heard from some iPhone Duo reviewers that the phone can’t work on a MagSafe stand when open, because the weight of the left half of the phone drags it down. I’m happy to report that this PopSocket actually largely solves the problem. It will still slip slightly for a longer period of time, but it’s good enough to make the experience usable.
I tested it on multiple MagSafe mounts, and the slippage issue improved across the board when using the PopSocket Low-Pro.
Wrap
My favorite benefit of the PopSocket Low-Pro is the fact that it dramatically improves the iPhone Duo experience while still allowing you to rock the phone without a case. Since the iPhone Duo is already 11.3mm thick when folded, I wasn’t thrilled with the idea of adding even more bulk to the phone.
The Low-Pro has a really low profile and you can’t really feel it when you hold the phone. It sticks out a little less than the camera bump.
If you are interested in purchasing a PopSocket Low-Pro, you can purchase one on Amazon for $36-40 depending on the color option you want. Navy, Gun Metal, Black, Electric Fuschia, Teal, Carbon Lattice, Mint and Tortoise are available for $40, while Lilac and Orange colors are available for $36, a 10% discount.
