In keeping with tradition, Apple closed the Apple Store this morning before the iPhone Duo was available for pre-order. If you’re waiting to purchase Apple’s new foldable, make sure you log in at 5am Eastern time.
All reports point to limited supply and relatively high demand, so everyone expects Apple to run out of stock on launch day very quickly. If you want a Duo for launch day, October 23, you need to be ready to purchase at 5am.
The iPhone Duo is Apple’s first foldable, featuring a 7.6-inch internal display and a 5.4-inch external display when closed. Apple designed the product to have minimal crease when opened, aided by a custom hinge design and a nano-texture matte finish on the internal display.
It’s powered by Apple’s latest A20 Pro chip and should offer comparable computing performance to the iPhone 18 Pro line. The cameras are a downgrade though, due to the device’s thinner design when unfolded, and the Duo only has Touch ID rather than Face ID biometrics.
The Duo is available in two colors, Night Sky and Star White, and starts at $1999 for the entry-level 256GB model.
iPhone Duo will launch with iOS 27.1, which will include a number of software UI optimizations for the product’s unusual form factor. This includes a new vertical bar where all the updated app controls appear along the right edge of the phone, making them easy to tap with your thumb.
All of Apple’s apps have also been updated to seamlessly expand between the external and larger internal displays, and app developers are also pushing out compatibility updates as we speak.
While foldables in general make up a small percentage of overall smartphone sales, Apple’s entry into the category is expected to make its mark. We think the Duo will be a great success, at least relative to the competition.
The problem will be whether Apple will be able to produce enough, at least for the first few months. Reports indicate that Apple’s suppliers will ship around 7-10 million Duos for the rest of 2026.
