For the first time since 2021, Apple will overhaul the iPad mini with new display technology. It also marks the first chip update since 2024. Here’s what Apple has in store for this brand new iPad mini.

OLED display

This is definitely the voice you’ve heard the most. The next iPad mini will have an OLED display. It won’t be tandem OLED like the iPad Pro, though you’ll still get more vibrant colors, improved contrast, and a brighter display.

However, it’s unclear whether Apple will ship a 120Hz ProMotion display. The new iPad mini could end up still being 60Hz. Let’s hope this isn’t the case.

A20Pro chip

The current iPad mini features Apple’s 3nm A17 Pro chip with 8GB of memory. Rumors suggest that this new iPad mini will offer the A20 Pro chip with 12GB of memory, allowing it to run Apple’s most advanced on-device models locally, which offers some improved voice/dictation capabilities with Siri AI.

Beyond Siri’s AI, the A20 Pro should represent a notable leap in performance over the A17 Pro, with around a 60 percent improvement in multi-core CPU performance and a 166 percent improvement in GPU performance.

Water resistance

Apple is working to make the iPad mini water-resistant, with a new casing and redesigned speakers that will help eliminate water leaks. This will potentially make the iPad mini the first water-resistant iPad.

Prices

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the next iPad mini with OLED and the A20 Pro chip could potentially start at $799, a substantial increase over the iPad mini’s current $599 starting price. It’s unclear whether it will continue to start with 128GB of base storage at that price, though one might hope the company provides 256GB to soften the blow.
