BloombergMark Gurman reported today that Apple is facing a growing problem where some people purchase iPhones or other products and remove the accessories from the box, open the device and remove the components, and/or remove the entire device, then attempt to return the box hoping the employee doesn’t notice.
When a customer tries to return an iPhone, he said Apple retail employees are normally asked to open the box and check its contents, but Apple has since found a solution that will reduce inventory waste.
In his Ignition newsletter today, Gurman said Apple has begun providing retail employees with a device that can “scan a supplied iPhone and run diagnostics on it to ensure the phone is completely intact, leaving the box sealed and able to be returned to inventory.” Apple began rolling out this device in stores earlier this month, he said.
