Apple has scheduled a product presentation in Los Angeles for October 28, where it is expected to unveil its first MacBook Pro with a touchscreen. The redesigned laptop will reportedly have an OLED display, a thinner and lighter body, and a Dynamic Island-style cutout. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is also preparing an updated iMac with a new M6 chip and additional color options.
OLED, touchscreen, and Dynamic Island mark a major redesign of the MacBook Pro
A touchscreen MacBook Pro would mark a significant change for Apple, which has never equipped its Mac laptops with touchscreens, reserving touch input for devices like the iPad. The new MacBook Pro is expected to be available in 14- and 16-inch versions, keeping the familiar design and making the laptops thinner and lighter.
The move to OLED should deliver deeper blacks and higher contrast than the mini-LED panels used in current MacBook Pro models. The display is also expected to feature a Dynamic Island-style cutout at the top, similar to that found on recent iPhones. It would replace the existing notch and provide space for interactive elements.
Apple is reportedly working on changes to macOS to make touch input more natural without turning the Mac into a large iPad. It is expected that the interface will adapt depending on whether users interact with the screen or use a trackpad. For example, tapping a button might display a menu with larger controls positioned around the user’s finger.
The new OLED models are expected to use Apple’s existing M5 Pro and M5 Max processors, which debuted in March. The main updates will therefore concern the display, design and input options rather than a new generation of chips. The more expensive OLED panels could also increase starting prices by up to $500 over current models, which start at $2,499 for the 14-inch version and $2,999 for the 16-inch model in the United States.
Apple is not expected to immediately discontinue production of existing MacBook Pro models with mini-LED displays. They will remain available alongside the new touchscreen versions for a time, offering customers a less expensive alternative. Apple may also introduce a new entry-level MacBook Pro on October 28, featuring an M6 processor but retaining a conventional display without OLED technology.
iMac will receive an M6 chip and new colors
The MacBook Pro isn’t the only Mac that’s due for an update. Apple is also preparing a refreshed 24-inch iMac with an M6 processor, which will replace the current 2024 model powered by the M4 chip.
The new all-in-one desktop will reportedly offer new color options, although specific shades haven’t been revealed. Beyond the processor and colors, no major design changes are expected.
Apple is also reportedly developing an iMac with an OLED display, but getting to that model will still take several years.
