One advantage of the PlayStation Portal is its ability to cloud-stream an expanded selection of PS5 games. With a PS Plus Premium subscription, players don’t need a console to use the feature. The Asobi: Remote Play app mimics the Sony handheld, bringing the functionality to Steam Deck and Windows devices.
New in version 1.0
After debuting on the Apple platform in 2025, a playtest for Asobi arrived on the Valve marketplace in August. While the program has shown promise, version 1.0 introduces new benefits. Notably, it supports Windows at launch. This means that even handhelds and PCs running Microsoft operating systems can access more PS4 and PS5 titles.
The PS Portal offers two ways to take PlayStation games on the go. Remote Play allows the public to enjoy games installed on consoles, but you need to own the system. Sony added cloud streaming in late 2025, which doesn’t rely on increasingly expensive hardware. PS Plus Premium allows subscribers to play pre-purchased options that aren’t normally available.
Sony has released Windows software that offers some of the same benefits. Unfortunately, it is not compatible with Linux-based Steam Decks and Steam Machines. Furthermore, the number of candidates that can be streamed is more limited than on the Portal and Asobi.
The program has a simple interface, split between Remote and Cloud tabs. Players must sign in to PS Plus to view the full list of PS4 and PS5 games. The free version includes basic DualSense functionality. Meanwhile, the $8.99 paid upgrade unlocks haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and 4K/60fps cloud streaming. Stream frame generation in version 1.0 smoothes out choppy images.
Too many bugs?
Steam reviews are off to a mostly positive start, although some connectivity issues have been reported. The developer has pledged to update the app to address any issues.
As Asobi takes aim at handheld competitors, Sony may soon give gamers new reasons to buy a PlayStation Portal. Recent FCC documents suggest that the rumored OLED upgrade is closer to a reveal.
