After weeks of testing, Apple has released macOS Golden Gate 27.2. Officially it’s a minor release, but the changes under the hood are paving the way for touch-screen Macs.

As previously revealed during the beta testing period, macOS 27.2 introduced a cosmetic change to Apple Music. It’s part of a larger rebrand that includes a new video version for music productions. Now that macOS 27.2 has been released as the current official operating system for Mac, there are some visual changes.

The Apple Music logo and new color scheme are the most visible update, with the old red lights replaced by blue. But there are also changes to the volume and brightness controls.

If you access these via the keyboard, they now go down in small but distinct steps instead of in one continuous line.

Even more significantly, Siri AI has been updated to support five more languages:

  • French
  • Japanese
  • Korean
  • Portuguese
  • Spanish

General performance security updates and bug fixes are also available.

What will ultimately make this version noteworthy, though, is that it includes many features that have to do with touch control. This is the version that features touch tools within Apple apps like Safari and Photos.

They are not yet noticeable, as Apple does not describe or demonstrate them. But they mean that macOS Golden Gate is now ready for the expected OLED touch-screen version of the MacBook Pro.

The new macOS 27.2 runs on the same list of Macs that support version 27. It’s the macOS edition that will now come pre-installed on all new Macs.

If your Mac is running macOS 27.2, you will be prompted to update it. However, it may take weeks before you are prompted and you can go to instead System settings, General, Software update to request installation now.

However, AppleInsider always recommends waiting at least a few days after a macOS update. Even a relatively minor problem is significant because the operating system touches everything and any problem can be serious.

Wait for other users to find these issues and for Apple to fix them.
