Review-Rhinoshields-iPhone-18-Pro-protective-case-is-minimalist-yet.png

iPhone bumper cases have been a fan favorite since the iPhone 4 bumpers, but options these days are few and far between. Rhinoshield offers a decent option for those who want a minimal case.

Apple finally got back into the bumper business last year with the iPhone Air. I was hoping that Apple would extend the protective case to the iPhone 18 Pro (like they did with the clear case and the iPhone 11), but unfortunately, that wasn’t the case. In my search for another option, I came across Rhinoshield’s Minimalist Impact Bumper Case.

Key details

The Impact Bumper case has a similar fit to most other bumpers, where the border on the screen is quite small, while the border on the back is a little larger. A unique feature of this case, and one that I really like, is that it has special mounts that keep the camera plateau and lenses away from wherever the phone is resting, which I especially appreciate considering the aluminum 17 Pro and 18 Pro. This results in a case that is much more protective than the typical bumper would be. It also eliminates annoying wobbling when using your phone on a flat surface.

The fit of the case, however, isn’t quite what I was hoping for. It’s a little loose and you can easily fold the edges outward, and I wonder if they might end up stretching over time. I don’t think the phone coming out of the case if dropped will be an issue (and I tested this unintentionally). That said, the material of the entire case is hard plastic rather than rubber, so hopefully it’ll be fine in the long run. Rhinoshield claims it is made entirely from a single material and is therefore 100% recyclable.

The case is available in three colors, matching the colors of the iPhone 18 Pro: white, blue and black (sorry Burgundy fans). The blue, which is what I have, is close to Glacier but not perfect.

Downsides

There are some downsides, however. My main complaint with the case is that the buttons can be difficult to press. For some reason they went with an almost flush design, and the way the buttons are designed makes them feel mushy.

The choice of material as a whole could be a disadvantage. To me, it seems cheaper than Apple’s iPhone Air bumper, but some may end up preferring it. I definitely prefer it to the materials of a typical clear TPU/rubber case. The material and loose design seem to attract even pocket dust.

If you use Apple’s wrist strap or shoulder strap, note that this case does Not have the required circuit connection points.

Conclusion

The Rhinoshield bumper is definitely not perfect and I still hope Apple extends their bumpers to other iPhones. Ultimately, though, I decided to keep the case, for one main reason: It allows me to have a nearly caseless experience without worrying about the fragile aluminum chipping or denting. As far as I know, the protective case is usually only available on their website, so the price of around $30 matches Apple’s price ($39) after shipping. You can purchase the Rhinoshield Minimalist Impact Bumper Case here. (Occasionally, an Amazon listing will appear, so you can try that, too.)
